It’s just a case of diving in and hanging on until the end. These Survival modes can be random, so you never know what’s coming. New weapons are also available, such as fish umbrellas and light sabres. These levels, or zones, offer a fancy new location such as a wrestling ring with electrified fences, or inside a pyramid. Whatever the perk, you get to choose between two. The ability to double jump, a golden pipe or boomerang, stat buff and debuffs, and more. Like Risk of Rain 2, you collect perks at the end of each level that can be carried over. Each of the new characters can be used in the main campaign, so if you fancy replaying it again with the new blood, it’s just as rewarding as it ever was. He utilises both ground and aerial combat superbly, wiping out some of the tougher enemies without breaking a sweat. He’s quick, with long combos that do heaps of damage. Whilst Max and Estel are good, Shiva is by far the best. He can also do a large amount of damage from distance if you use him right. Although he’s slow, he has a devastating area of impact when enemies get too close. Like in the main campaign, her special calls in back-up to fire rocket launchers into the area of combat, knocking anyone close by off their feet. She packs a lot of power in her kicks, and her headlock is savage. Estel offers a nice mix of speed and strength. Nightmare: Awesome new charactersĭepending on who you choose, each has a distinct fighting style. Estel, Max, and Shiva will be familiar to anyone who played through the base game, but getting to play as them makes you appreciate them much more. The three new characters offer a mix of playstyles, and the new Survival mode makes playing SoR4 feel entirely different. X Nightmare DLC offers a decent amount of content for the money. It had that familiarity of the old games, but had some insanely good combat. This means brand new animations have been incorporated into the complete Streets of Rage 4 roster, with some even presenting new voice lines, and learning which exact loadout of moves a player prefers should effectively breathe new life into the game as a whole.Streets of Rage 4 was magnificent, wasn’t it? Granted, it wasn’t a long game, but I finished it multiple times on my own and with friends. Leveling up through Survival mode unlocks alternate specials, blitz attacks, and so on, all of which can then be utilized in the other gameplay modes. It's a mode which will put veterans through their paces but also lead to some interesting character builds.Ī new mode and three new characters would have been enough to secure the value of the DLC, but there’s also new moves for every playable character - even the lower-resolution members of the gang. Later levels introduce multiple bosses at once, including ghost duplicates of the heroes that are especially crafty, as these fights weren’t to be found in any previous Streets of Rage game. Individual levels in this mode include motifs from the original game with brand new artwork, low-resolution arenas based on scenes from earlier titles, as well as a wide selection of bosses which seemingly span the full series. X Nightmare, including the trumpeted swordfish, what seems to be a durian fruit, and quite a few others, all of which will populate each randomized Survival mode area. It’s the kind of game mode which builds on the proven strengths of Streets of Rage 4’s combat but also adds some satisfying chaos.
